A joint initiative between the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Queensland Government has provided a $3 million COVID-19 boost to Maryborough through the Works for Queensland program. The result is the total completion of a brand new water play and all abilities playground in the heart of Maryborough’s Anzac Park, named “SplashSide”. The name comes from an extensive consultation process with a community that has welcomed the development at every step of the way.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council contracted the Wombat Hire team to carry out essential excavation services in preparation for the build, clearing the way for their construction partners PBS Builders to operate on the site.

As the region’s foremost excavation services and plant hire provider, Wombat Hire got to work, providing high-quality, bulk excavation services in line with project requirements, including ground-breaking and removing debris. Wombat also ensured all relevant safety standards were adhered to, guaranteeing the ongoing safety and productivity of the site.

Thanks to their comprehensive fleet of excavators and operators, Wombat Hire provided the necessary cut and fill excavation services to the site, and were able to ensure all work was completed on time and to the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s specification. Wombat then carried out detailed excavation services on the SplashSide site which included excavating for foundations, slabs, footings, and additional earthworks for the park.

Local builders, PBS, then took over the project and finished the development of the water park. This was an opportunity for three Aldridge State High School students to work on a serious project as part of their work experience over the Easter holidays. The development of young people’s essential skills is crucial to the construction industry, and just another example of how important the SplashSide project is to the Maryborough community.

As always, efficient collaboration is Wombat Hire’s priority. Throughout the job, they professionally cooperated with the concreters, plumbers, and other trades people on site. Wombat Hire once again stayed on-time, in budget, while still meeting the requirements of the project.

The park itself was opened by Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour on June 12th, and includes a range of features such as a sensory wall, an inclusive orbit element, a large tipping bucket, a trampoline, a waterfall, crystal fountains, and a hammock. These features are designed to be accessible to all abilities, setting SplashSide apart from conventional water parks.

Also included in the park are stream jets, a roller slide, cosmic cannons, spray jets, play hoses, a new shelter with a barbecue, and improved amenities for park-goers. Anzac Park was already a popular outdoor space in Maryborough. Thanks to the skilful and collaborative work of Wombat Hire, this accessible upgrade is making the area even more attractive for residents and visitors alike.

The COVID Works for Queensland program, which provided a boost in funding for the project, is a part of the Queensland Government’s economic recovery strategy and has already injected $200 million into local projects. The Wide Bay and Fraser Coast will receive over $45 million towards infrastructure projects that will create 850 local jobs and will provide even greater opportunities for companies like Wombat Hire.

With their expert presence on site, Wombat Hire have efficiently and professionally completed yet another large project. In doing so they have further solidified their relationship with the Fraser Coast Regional Council and developed a professional partnership with PBS builders. Wombat Hire have lived up to their reputation in the Wide Bay area as a reliable excavation services contractor and plant hire supplier, able to be relied on for safe, timely excavation projects of all sizes.
