At Wombat Hire we decided to do a test to see which excavator was the most efficient at digging trenches. This test was conducted with our two most popular sized excavators; the 1.7 tonne mini and the 5 tonne mini.
We fired up a 5 tonne excavator and dug a 450mm x 450mm trench in a straight line for 1 hour. We dug a total of 50 meters in 1 hour in hard clay material. We did the same with the 1.7 tonne mini and dug 22 meters in 1 hour.
Whilst these comparisons only show costs per meter to dig 450mm x 450mm trenches, they do show that on average the 5 tonne excavator is more than twice as fast as the mini 1.7 tonne excavator and almost half the cost to dig the same trench!
However, you must take into account other factors when choosing what size excavator to hire such as access to dig site, minimum hire charges and the budget to do your job etc.
The mini 1.7 tonne excavator can squeeze through a gate 950mm wide and under obstacles 2300mm high, while the 5 tonne excavator needs 2590mm height and 2120mm width to access sites.
The transportation of the mini is much easier as there is the flexibility of transporting with a truck and dog or a trailer. Whereas the 5 tonne will require the negotiation of prices with a transporting company.
5 tonne excavators often come with a minimum charge for 4 hours (1 hour travel and 3 hours onsite) while mini excavators are 2 hours minimum (1 hour travel and 1 hour onsite).
Most small home projects have a budget under $500, so this is where the mini excavators really perform, while larger excavators are more suited to commercial and civil projects. Mini’s can be used for a wide range of projects and are much cheaper. Whereas the 5 tonne is much faster at completing jobs.
Reach out to Wombat Hire today to hire an excavator for your next project. We have excavators for hire ranging from 1.7 tonnes to 35 tonnes. Speak with a member of our team now by giving us a call or filling out our online form.
